The population of Stevensville is 91.7% White, and 0.31% Korean. The population of Detroit is 79.1% Black, and 0.02% Korean. It’s not uncommon for me to feel alone in the places I call home.
The Stevensville painting was direct, and methodical. It was very intentional, and executed to follow the plan. The Detroit painting started in that same fashion, but changed pretty quickly. My mark making is always deliberate, but while painting Detroit, I didn’t want it to feel robotic or purely informational. I wanted to evoke more emotion, and create a piece that was more engaging than statistics.
Detroit is more than an expression of being alone, as it’s not always sad… it can also be dynamic.
